The importance of touch
We are Social animals
Harlow’s Monkeys 1959:
Harlow aimed to find out whether baby monkeys would prefer a source of
food or a source of comfort and protection as an attachment figure.
They had two artificial surrogate mothers. ...
It was concluded that Infant monkeys formed more of an attachment with a
figure that provided comfort and protection.
TOUCHING
Harlow's findings revealed that separated infant monkeys would show attachment behaviours towards a cloth-covered surrogate mother when frightened, rather than a food-dispensing surrogate mother.
Proxemics - intimate vs. social distance
The space between people can show how friendly or 'intimate' a conversation is.
... In all health and social care settings it is important that all individuals
have their own personal space, if people are not allowed to have their own
personal space it can be considered aggressive.
Intimate distance ranges from touching to about 18 inches (46 cm) apart,
and is reserved for lovers, children, close family members, friends, and
pets.
2. Personal distance begins about an arm's length away; starting around 18
inches (46 cm) from the person and ending about 4 feet (122 cm) away.
Personal space or proxemics, a form of non-verbal communication, is the
space surrounding each person. Zones: Broadly, the four distinct zones are:
1. Intimate (0-2 ft.),
2. Personal (2-4 ft),
3. Social (4-12 ft.) and
4. Public (more than 12 ft.).
Couples need space, so they don't suffocate each other
Having time apart encourages independence and freshness in a relationship.
You'll be happier for it, and your relationship will bloom
